Pitching feels productive. You're covering ground, showing value, filling the silence. It's also the fastest way to become interchangeable with every other vendor the buyer has seen this month.
Why sellers default to pitching
Pitching is safe. It's rehearsed, it's controllable, and it avoids the discomfort of not knowing the answer. Diagnosing means sitting with a problem long enough to understand it, which requires confidence that silence is allowed.
- Earn the right to present by proving you understand the problem first.
- Show two or three things that matter to this buyer, not everything you have.
- Be willing to say a use case isn't a fit for you.
The seller who best describes the buyer's problem usually wins, even without the best product.
Diagnosis builds trust. Trust is what buyers use to choose between products that all technically work.
